Bude Christmas Day Swim
The Bude Christmas Day swim is an annual event that takes place on Crooklets beach. Originally from Essex, this is something that is completely new to me and very unique. A typical Christmas morning for myself is hanging from the night before then meeting your mates down the local boozer for a Christmas beer (or two). But these days, being a Dad has changed my way of life.
After letting the kids open their presents I decided to pop down to Crooklets to document the morning. A good 400 people in attendance it was a perfect event to document people being people. Unfortunately, the weather was not very kind and we did have quite a bit of rain. Of course, a bit of sun would have been lovely but everyone had a great time still regardless.
The same way I approach weddings, a complete unobtrusive, documentary style equipped with the Fujfilm X100V. This camera is perfect for street photography due to its small body and silent shutter. You can get so close to people without making them feel uncomfortable. Nothing worse than approaching photography like a paparazzi with a big DSLR in someones face.
I wanted the viewers to get a real intimate experience from the photos like the feeling they was there. So, instead of standing out the way with the other photographers, I stood in the water to get right in the middle of it all. The photos are exactly what I pictured. I also had equipped a Go Pro to document behind the scenes. You can see the video on my Youtube channel.
