I’m Gary, a documentary wedding photographer covering London, Cornwall and the rest of the UK. My approach is simple — no awkward posing, no turning your wedding into a photoshoot and no dragging you away from everyone for hours.

I want the real stuff. The laughs, hugs, tears, chaos, questionable dance moves and all the little moments happening around you that you probably didn’t even notice. Candid, natural and completely unposed.

Rather than standing on the sidelines trying to be invisible, I get amongst it. Think of me as another guest who just happens to have a camera. By the time the dance floor kicks off, I’ll probably know half your mates and I’ll be right in the middle of it with them.

That’s what documentary wedding photography is about for me — people being people, while you actually get to enjoy your bloody wedding.

I’ve photographed weddings all over London, from big celebrations to tiny town hall weddings with only a handful of people there. That variety is one of the reasons I bloody love shooting in the city.

I’ve worked at venues including the Horniman Museum, Strawberry Hill House and plenty of London town halls, as well as weddings that spill out into the streets, pubs and everything in between.

Being based in Cornwall these days doesn’t stop me regularly heading back to London. For me, London wedding photography is at its best when I can document the city as part of the story too — the streets, people, pubs, buses and all the chaos going on around you.

Wherever you’re getting married, my approach stays the same: candid, natural and unposed photography that lets you spend your wedding with the people you actually invited.

I bloody love a dance floor. And I don’t disappear five minutes after your first dance either — I want to stay and document the party properly.

This is when everyone finally lets their hair down. Ties come off, shoes disappear, tequila starts looking like a sensible idea and your nan might suddenly become the star of the dance floor.

For me, documentary wedding photography means telling the whole story. So I’ll be right in amongst it, camera in hand, catching the chaos, questionable dance moves and all those brilliant little moments you might not remember the next morning.

Some of my favourite photographs happen when everyone else thinks the photographer has already gone home.

I want to be one of the last men standing.

I stay way beyond the first dance because some of the best moments happen later — when everyone has forgotten about the camera and the party is properly going.

I’ll get stuck in with everyone rather than watching from the edge of the dance floor. That’s when you get the photographs that really show what it felt like to be there.
