Fuji 23mm F1.4 (35mm equivalent)
This……is a game changer for me. For the past 12 months I was using the Fuji 16mm F1.4 (24mm equivalent) and it was amazing. The close focusing was perfect for detail shots at weddings and even dog photography for some really quirky photos. But, there was something that was not quite right. Auto focus was quick and like most Fuji lenses the size was just right. After much thought, it came down to personal preference which was the focal length. That 24mm equivalent was just a tad too wide for what I needed. In particular, couple portraits. A change was needed before the hectic 2021 weddings were about to start and the glowing reviews for the Fuji 23mm F1.4 looked very nice.
The Fuji 23mm F1.4 is just a wonderful lens. Slightly lighter and smaller than the 16mm but keeping all the pros from that lens. Close focusing? Unfortunately not, but this was something that was not high on my must haves. The need to be close to subjects and carry out a photojournalism approach to weddings was the must have. Paired with the Fuji XT3 I have so much confidence going into weddings now.
I don’t want to bore you with spec details. You can get that anywhere on the internet. But, a quick mention of the 1.4 aperture. This, is a must have for wedding photographers. I will happily open this up to 1.4 when needed and my photos look bloody good. I find shooting between F2/2.5 is perfect. But when in low light situations open this baby up to the widest.
I will leave you with photos from weddings shot with the Fuji 23mm F1.4. All taken at F 1.4, F2 and F2.5. Please leave any questions in the comments box below if you have any.
